Bloodborne Pathogen Training Course
The bloodborne pathogen course taught for rescuers in conjunction with CPR or First Aid training is based upon the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard and is designed to educate bystanders and rescuers in some of the pathogenic exposure risks inherent in first aid contact. The course includes a discussion of the epidemiology and symptoms of bloodborne diseases, an explanation of the modes of transmission, the recognition of tasks that may involve exposure, an explanation of Universal Precautions, Work Practice Controls, Engineering Controls, Administrative Controls, and the use of Personal Protective Equipment. The course will also discuss the employer's responsibilities, including the availability of an Exposure Control Plan, and employee accessibility to the Hepatitis B vaccine.

The Bloodborne Pathogen Standard
The Bloodborne Pathogen Standard was developed by OSHA to protect any employee who may come into contact with blood or Other Potentially Infectious Materials (OPIM). A discussion of the standard and what type of work or job is most likely to carry a higher risk will be conducted.
Bloodborne Disease
A description of what a Bloodborne disease is will be explored. The most serious Bloodborne diseases, Hepatitis (HBV and HCV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), will be examined, along with the pathology, symptoms and treatments currently available.
Exposure Control Plan
An Exposure Control Plan includes steps on preventing an exposure, which should include a written Exposure Plan, annual evaluation of the plan, and providing labels and signs to identify potentially infectious materials or containers. This section will cover the Exposure Control Plan in a step by step manner.
Safe Disposal Methods
Any equipment, cleaning materials or Personal Protective Equipment needs to be disposed of properly if they’ve been contaminated. A discussion of the type of equipment and the methods will be reviewed in this section.

| Universal Precautions is an approach to infection control and that precautionary methods must be used every time, with everyone will be explored and emphasized. |
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Employee and employer responsibility pertaining to Personal Protective Equipment will be examined as well as an in-depth look at the various types of Personal Protective Equipment available and which equipment is appropriate for different types of jobs.
If an Exposure Occurs
The two types of exposures will be reviewed in this section, as well as a comprehensive, step by step guide on what to do if an exposure does occur. Clean up procedures for a spill will be covered here as well.
Employer Responsibilities
An employer has many responsibilities in regard to Bloodborne Pathogens and this section covers these responsibilities from top to bottom. Each step from developing a written Exposure Plan, Engineering Controls, Work Practice Controls and the employer’s obligation to providing the Hepatitis B vaccine will be reviewed here.
